Heather Noble

They have changed the start order in World Cup speed events. The best ten competitors (based on their ranking on the World Cup Start List or WCSL in that event) start between #6 and #15, in random order. They no longer get to pick their start position (though they are required to attend the public bib draw). Racers ranked from 11th to 20th on the WCSL start #1-#5 and #16-#20, in random order. After #20, they start any competitors with over 500 WCSL points who are not ranked high on the WCSL in this event. After those racers, they start those ranked 21st to 30th on the WCSL, up to #30. There is no corresponding rule allowing racers with over 500 WCSL points an advantageous start position in GS/SL.
This rule change gets rid of the “dreaded tenth place” under the old rule, where the racer ranked in tenth place on the WCSL would get stuck with whichever start position everyone else in the top ten did not want to take -- usually first place. In most speed races it is better not to go first, because racers want to get course reports from coaches watching the first racers with advice about where they are finding speed or having trouble. This is especially true in Super G, where you don’t have training runs to practice which line is fastest. Under the new rule, the very top racers may (or may not, depending on the luck of the draw) be spread out among start positions #6-20, since they are randomly assigned start positions and do not get to select their start position.
I don’t think that they have changed the start order in GS/SL, but I have not closely studied the rule governing starts in those events (it’s Rule 9.2 in the World Cup Rules if you are interested).
If you want to see the exact language describing the new speed event start order, it is in Rule 9.3 of the World Cup rules, here:
